RNCM Strings Festival 2018: the view from our stand with Bärenreiter & Edition Peters

The RNCM’s prestigious annual event dedicated to bowed strings, guitar and harp was focused this year on British and French music (Saturday 13 - Sunday 14 January 2018).

We teamed up with leading international publishers Bärenreiter and Edition Peters to offer a wide range of solo, chamber and educational publications as well as a selection of string instruments, accessories and gifts, all available for sale as part of the exhibition on the RNCM concourses.

For further information about the festival, see the official website here. We’ll be back at RNCM in March for the Chamber Music Festival!

Events at Forsyth: Murray McLachlan plays Marcus Blunt & Rachmaninov! | Plus EPTA Piano Workshop, Learn to Play Day & RNCM Strings Festival

Welcome to a new year of events at Forsyth!

This month we look forward to a very special in-store performance by Murray McLachlan, featuring the work of a composer he has long championed, Marcus Blunt (a former member of staff at Forsyth!), alongside his own transcription of a concerto movement by Rachmaninov. The event celebrates their new CD and sheet music releases, which you will be able to discuss with Murray and Marcus, purchase at discounted prices and even have signed!

In February, we have the latest in our series of EPTA piano workshops with Susan Bettaney, while in March – earlier than usual this year – the enormously enjoyable Learn to Play Day returns: if you’ve always wanted to play an instrument but never had the chance, or if your children are trying to decide on an instrument to take up at school, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy friendly, expert taster lessons for free!

But first, we are off to the Royal Northern College of Music to showcase our extensive ranges of sheet music, instruments and accessories for string players at the RNCM Strings Festival 2018.

Check out our Events pages for more information!

5 million and counting! Check out the new viral video featuring #forsythspiano

On Friday 1st December, Christopher Scamp had a go on Forsyth’s street piano… Just five days later, a video of his performance has already been viewed on Facebook over 5 million times!

Check out the video here! – or at the Manchester Evening News.

Christopher is entirely self taught and doesn’t even have a piano at home. We therefore have teamed up with Kawai pianos and have given him a digital piano to say thank you for a publicity he has brought to the shop. He’s been back several times since. You can keep up with this viral phenomena by following our Facebook and Twitter.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updates or to post your own videos from #forsythspiano…

2017’s Top 10 Christmas Gifts for Musicians – Recommended by Forsyth

Forsyth’s 160th Merry Musical Christmas in Manchester!

As Manchester’s oldest independent retailer, we are celebrating our 160th Christmas this December. With so much experience serving the local musical community, there is no better authority on what the city’s musicians would like to find under the tree come Christmas Day! Our top ten list of musical gifts for Christmas 2017 has something for everyone, from a super-cute Beethoven Bear to a super-rare, silver-framed Kawai GL10 Grand Piano.

1 – Manchester Bee Leather Guitar Strap (£45)

A beautifully embossed, classic leather strap with £5 from each sale going to Musicians Against Homelessness.

Kawai GL10 Grand Piano featuring chrome fittings and silver painted frame (£8,777)

This new design from Kawai gives the traditional black grand piano a contemporary twist. There are only two in the UK currently and Forsyth has had them both! But hurry – we only have one left…

3 – Little Martin LXM Acoustic Guitar (£385)

The model made famous by Ed Sheeran, this is the perfect instrument for fans looking to follow in his footsteps. In addition, its small size and heavy duty gig bag make this an ideal travel companion.

    Beethoven Bear (£11.90)

11.5cm of highly-cultured cuteness. A Mozart Duck is also available for bath time.

5 – The Bumper Ukulele Playlist: Gold Edition (£12.99)

The ukulele’s massive popularity continues! Give the uke-ist in your life something new to play with this brilliant collection featuring everything from folk and jazz standards to recent pop and rock hits.

Gordon Smith Morris Minor GS2 Guitar (£850)

A guitar with serious Mancunian musical heritage. Gordon Smith was founded in Partington and their instruments famously played by John Squire of the Stone Roses among many other indie and punk icons. A range of custom finishes are available to make your GS2 unique.

La La Land – Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack (Piano | Vocal | Guitar – £14.99)

Winner of 6 Oscars including Best Original Score and Best Original Song, the ubiquitous film of 2017 is equally well served in print with versions available for piano, voice and guitar, ukulele, keyboard, violin, harp, string orchestra, easy guitar, easy piano, piano duet

    8 – Casio CDP-130 Digital Piano Package (£359)

This is the place to start for beginner or returning pianists wanting quality on budget. The fully weighted keyboard is like playing a real piano, and it comes with a stand, stool and headphones.

Korg Volca Keys Mini Synth (£139)

This incredibly popular analogue synthesiser is a brilliant first synth for anyone wanting to dabble in electronica or re-create the glory days of 80s dance. Add the Volca Bass and Volca Beats for full analogue synth joy.

10 – The Best Christmas Songbook Ever (£14.95)

A good old Christmas sing-along will lift the mood even among the frostiest gathering of relations. Make sure you’ve got the dots on-hand to make it happen.
